Dyersburg Man Convicted of Vehicular Homicide

A 46-year-old Dyersburg man has been convicted of vehicular homicide and speeding in connection of an April 2022 traffic accident on Interstate 40, according to 26th Judicial District Attorney Jody S. Pickens.
Marlos Lekeith Tipton, of Dyersburg, was convicted after a one-day bench trial before Judge Donald Allen, February 22, 2023. The indictment was the result of an April 10, 2022, traffic accident near the 106-mile marker on I-40 which caused the death of 34-year-old Maria Morales Ortega.
According to testimony from Trooper Shane Moore of the Tennessee Highway Patrol’s Critical Incident Response Team, Tipton was traveling at 101 miles per hour and had been traveling at speeds as high at 129.87 miles per hour prior to the crash. Ortega was enroute from Texas to Lebanon, Tennessee with her children and other family members when the car in which she was a passenger was struck from behind by Tipton’s vehicle, according to officials.
