Editor’s Note: This season will mark the centennial season of football at Lexington High School. Local historian, McArthur Lewis, looks at LHS football history in a five-part series.

The Early Years – 1920s

Football at LHS started with the playing of a few football games in the fall of 1923.  By then, the LHS building was a three-story brick structure located at its present site on White Street.  The building burned at the beginning of the 1927 school year.  A new building was erected on the same site and it lasted into the 1980s.  This is a short version of the history; a more extensive history has been written and will be shared later.  Much of the information comes from the records of Mr. W. L. Bobbitt, a longtime teacher, coach and principal of LHS.
