LES Broadband Project Discussed at Lexington Rotary

Lexington Electric System’s General Manager Jeff Graves was the special guest speaker at the April 26, 2022, meeting of the Lexington Rotary Club.
Jeff discussed the broadband internet project which is being researched and applied for by Lexington Electric System.
The project started in late September of 2021, LES started looking for someone to help with the $4 million available through some grants, and found a consultant and conducted a survey. “The messages on the survey really hit home,” he said. “People in the county without broadband were begging for service.” Approval was requested from TVA and the Lexington Board of Mayor and Aldermen were in favor of moving forward as well. Approval was also secured from the Comptroller, and the city of Lexington moved forward with a public hearing and passed a resolution in March for the project.
LES and the board will need to fund the portion of the project that is not covered by a grant. The project will be about $50 million, and it is hoped that at least $28 million will be covered by a grant. The board at Lexington will make the final decision once the…
