Wharton Smith Talks Cattle at Lexington Rotary Club

Fellow Rotarian Wharton Smith was the special guest speaker at the March 29, 2022, meeting of the Lexington Rotary Club.

Wharton gave a presentation on his Longhorn Bee Farm, which has Longhorn cattle and also bees. He graduated with a degree in finance from the University of Florida in 1979 and then spent time in the U.S. Army. He has spent the last 35 years in banking and mortgages, but he had a dream of retiring and found a place in rural Henderson County to create a homestead. He likes to hunt, fish, and be outside, and his hundred acres gives him relaxation, a continuing sense of purpose, and a legacy for his children and grandchildren.

So, why cattle? “Well, I didn’t want to spend all my retirement cutting grass!” Cattle helps to maintain the homestead, and longhorn cattle can take care of most of the local predators. Cattle also make a great tax advantage, and Tennessee has programs and…
