A student awards ceremony and reception were held at the old Franklin-Wilkins airport building, the home of Lexington Post #1294 of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). The event was held to honor the recipients of the Patriot’s Pen and Voice of Democracy Essay Contests.

The Patriot’s Pen is the essay contest held on the middle school level. There to receive her 1st Place honor and to read her essay was Ella Rhodes, daughter of Robin and Molly Rhodes. Ella is a student at Lexington Middle School. Not able to attend were 2nd Place winner Ariana Lucero, and 3rd Place winner Zoey Russell.

The Voice of Democracy is the essay contest held at the high school level. Present to receive the 1st Place award was Avery Pace of Lexington High School, the daughter of Sammy and DeAnne Pace.
