Officer Jesse Gibson, with the Lexington Police Department, was the special guest speaker for the August 24, 2021, meeting of the Lexington Rotary Club.

Jesse talked about some of pitfalls that juveniles encounter on social media. Sexual predators are rampant on all the social media platforms, especially ones where the messages and photographs disappear and are harder to trace.

Kik, Grinder, Woods App, Discard, We Chat, Snapchat are often used by them because it is so easy to impersonate someone else or put together a fake profile. When they are turned in, the accounts often lead to nowhere. Jesse recommends Facebook for juveniles, but is still cautious about Tik Tok, and a parent should always be mindful of social media use by their children.

Kik is often used for indecent photographs of juveniles, pedophiles sometimes take photos of their own children and swap them around the net. “Just really watch what your kids are on,” he said. There are also so many things that can be done to make Snapchat private, so have your children…
