City Votes Tax Increase, County Sends School Budget Back

Article by Steve Corlew

The Lexington Board of Aldermen approve a 74-cent property tax rate increase, while the Henderson County Commission set the school’s budget back for reconsideration in separate meetings on Tuesday, May 28th.

The first reading of the city budget was approved on a 4-3 vote after passionate pleas from citizens not to raise taxes. Aldermen voted to approve the first reading of a $1.7829 per $100 assessment tax. Currently the city property rate is $1.0428 per $100 assessment. The board must have a second vote before the increase becomes final.

In a separate meeting the Henderson County Commission sent the county school’s budget back requesting that the $400,000 in projected sales tax revenue be put in a separate fund to be controlled by commissioners for capital improvements.

Commissioners will not vote on any of the county budgets until they have a school budget.
