Lexington Director of Schools, Cindy Olive, announced Tuesday, March 4th, that a Caywood Elementary School employee has been terminated as the city investigates the possible theft of medication from locked cabinets in the nurse’s office in the school.

Lexington Police Chief Jeff Middleton confirmed that there is an ongoing investigation, and he is currently consulting with 26th District Attorney General Jody Pickens about the department’s next step.

“No arrest has been made at this time, I can confirm we are conducting an active investigation regarding allegation of theft at our school,” Chief Middleton stated. Middleton will be releasing additional information as it becomes available.

Olive said the school system became aware that some medication may have been missing from locked cabinets in the nurse’s office on Monday, and school principal Courtney Bestwina and the school SRO began an investigation.

“We deeply regret that this situation occurred and understand that it may raise concerns,” Olive said in a statement. “We want to assure you that we are reviewing and strengthening our security protocols to prevent anything like this from happening again. We are also conducting a full audit of all student medication to ensure that no child’s health and safety was impacted.”

The school system notified parents and guardians of the incident.
