Holmes House Remembered

Friday was a beautiful day to say goodbye to a long-standing friend.  The Joe V. Holmes house, at 175 North Main, had suffered from that capricious enemy of all homes in the South, the termite, and was pulled down as members of the family watched nearby.    I called uncle Eddy Holmes and asked who built his father’s house, and caught a surprise. “My grandfather built it,” he said. “He was a carpenter, and had the trees cut from the farm, and hauled to Lexington for the lumber.  Dad was around…
