Lt. Mark M. Renfro, 7th Tenn. Cavalry US

The name of Captain Asa “Blackhawk” Hays is legendary in Henderson County.  One of his chief lieutenants, Mark Renfro, of Company C., is buried at the historic Derryberry Cemetery along Darden-Christian Chapel Road.  The modern family spelling is Renfroe.  Family historian, Phillip Renfroe says that Jackson J. Gilbert, also buried there, was the Lieutenant’s son in law. Mark Renfro is his great- great- great grandfather, while Gilbert was the ancestor to Alderman Peggy Gilbert’s husband, Thomas.   Renfro joined the 7th Tennessee at Lexington in August, 1862, as a 2nd Lieutenant, and his age of death in August 1865 says that he was…
